Craft product spotlight- Simplicity Bias Tape Maker

The Simplicity Bias tape maker makes custom single fold bias tape in the push of a button-(which means I do not have to stand and try to fold the fabric evenly and then iron it).

I recently purchased a Simplicity Bias Tape maker because I am not very good at trying to make my own bias tape. I usually do not make my cuts exactly 2" and then when I iron the fabric to make it a 1" tape it doesn't always turn out exactly even. I end up with tape that is bigger in places and doesn't fit right on my sewing project. I have ended up sewing on one side of blanket and missing the bias on the back side.
I saw a bias tape maker on a craft site so I decided to read reviews and liked what I read about the simplicity brand. I purchased the maker and tried it out today since I needed binding for my baby blanket I have been working on. The box reads- Easy as 1-2-3! 1-Cut bias strips and wind on spindle. You do have to cut the fabric strips very close to 2" as possible because 2-easy to use feed through tip - you have to put fabric through this small tip and it has to fit! 3- make perfect bias tape every time-no more burned fingers! Amen!
It worked and I have to say I am very pleased, it was very easy and quick to use- instructions are very clear and simple. Did you notice I used the word "very" 3xs.
I would recommend this to anyone who has the same problems and frustration that I once had with trying to make bias tape.
Here is what my 1" bias tape looked after I finished.

Wow, I can't believe how fast time flies, especially as I get older. I haven't posted in over 6 months, not sure why, I guess just didn't feel like it maybe. Since I last posted and really I only posted about all the books I had been reading, lots of things have happened.
During the summer of 2011, we went on vacation to Montana, Wyoming and South Dakota.

It was a much needed vacation considering we hadn't been on one for over 8 years. We had a blast and spent most of our time in the car sightseeing. We saw many beautiful sights in Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Tetons. Lots of animals and lots of people, it was so nice and comfortable in Montana and Wyoming, then we went to South Dakota. Mind you, it was July but Montana and Wyoming were in the 70s daytime and South Dakota was in the 100s, miserable. But still we had a great time with lots of great memories.
In August, we sent our youngest son off to college in Georgia and I had a hard time letting him go. I know that we are suppose to "cut the apron strings" but he is my baby. We had lots of packing and then the day came to take him to school, what a hard day. I cried after leaving him but was okay knowing that I would see him quite often since we go almost every weekend to deer hunt in Georgia.
In September I kept busy working and trying to get use to just me and hubby at the house. I did like that I didn't have as much clothes to wash or even dinner to cook. Hubby and I could eat sandwiches if we choose to but it was different. September seemed like such a long month.
In October, we got ready for deer hunting, see I have become a deer hunter as of last year. I really enjoy the outdoors and nature and shooting guns. I love sitting in a tree stand and enjoying the quiet still of the day as dawn breaks, it so satisfying and enjoyable.

I am enjoying the fall weather and beautiful leaves as they turn gold, red and bronze. In November, we are deer hunting and having some cold weather. The frosty mornings we bundle up to stay warm. The air is so crisp.

In December, of course we are still hunting and Christmas is fast approaching. J. decided to return home after his first semester and enrolled in the local community college in the wildlife and natural resources program. He loves being outdoors so that is what I would expect he would want to do for a career.
I had such a good Christmas with the family and enjoyed the time spent with them.I am enjoying all of the wonderful gifts that I received from the kids and hubby. I am very blessed!

Book Review- God's Promise for women of faith

My Review: I received this beautiful little book from BookSneeze to review during a very difficult time in our family's life. We were in the middle of a murder trial of our son. I read this book on our drive back and forth to the courthouse and cried at many of the wonderful verses that just spoke to my heart and some would make me smile. One in particular is Psalm 147:3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
This small book is great to carry in your purse, it is nice to pull this out and read a page or even a section a day to remind us how much God loves us and cares for each day.
I love the introduction
Over the years, Gloria Gaither has written many wonderful songs. One of my personal favorites is a children's song that goes like this: "I am a promise. I am a possibility. I am a promise with a capital P. I am great big bundle of potentiality." The delight in the verse is not just the musicality, but its truth. It's what the bible teaches you and me. We are all a promise...because of the promises of God.
Scripture is full of the promises of God. Promises about all He gives us, creates in us, causes for us, and does on our behalf all of our lives on this earth. The problem is we forget! We go through life as though we have nothing but what we accomplish on our own or work hard to provide for ourselves. We are daughters of the King who live like scavengers, who live as though our resources are limited when, in fact, His resources for us are unlimited.
What we need is a reminder, which I trust you'll find (every time you need one!) in this little book of God's enormous promises.

Dale Cramer was the second of four children born to a runaway Amishman turned soldier and a south Georgia sharecropper's daughter. His formative years were divided between far-flung military bases, but he inherited his mother's sense of place—

He took on small construction projects at night to help make ends meet— "and to preserve the remainder of my sanity," he says. While building an office in the basement of a communications consultant, a debate over labor/management relations turned into an article on mutualism which found its way into an international business magazine. It was Dale's first published article, and he liked the feel of it. He bought books, studied technique, and began participating in an online writers' forum, writing during the boys' naps and after they went to bed at night. Before long he was publishing short stories in literary magazines and thinking about writing a book.

Three storylines vied for Dale's attention when he finally decided to write a novel. His first two choices were commercially viable secular stories, and a distant third appeared to be some kind of Christian saga about a broken-down biker. The process of determining which novel to write was settled by a remarkable encounter with his youngest son, a lost set of keys, and God. His sense of direction was suddenly clarified. In 1997, Dale began work on Sutter's Cross, which was eventually published in 2003.

His second novel, Bad Ground (July 2004), while it is not autobiographical, contains a great deal of material drawn from his own experience as a construction electrician.

An Amish settlement in Ohio has run afoul of a law requiring their children to attend public school. Once there, they meet Domingo, a young man and guide who takes a liking to Miriam, something her father would never approve. While Paradise Valley is everything they'd hoped it would be, it isn't long before the bandits start giving them trouble, threatening to upset the fledgling Amish settlement, even putting their lives in danger. My sister-in-law recently had a baby shower for my niece who is having triplets. She asked if I could make some sweet treats in the form of chocolate. The brownies tasted as delicious as if I had baked them from scratch but without all of the work or mess.

Whew- what a crazy 2 months this has been- first in March, my mom was suddenly rushed to the hospital ICU from her doctor's appt because her heartrate was staying in the 30s she ended up having a pacemaker put in and now after 5 weeks of healing and gaining her strength back she is doing great. In the meantime, I had an injury at work which I ended up completely tearing my biceps tendon and another muscle in my shoulder so I had rotator cuff surgery AGAIN!... I am on the mend now, enough about my crazy life.
I was asked by Jeff@smellywasher if I would like to review and giveaway a bottle of Smelly Washer and I said "heck yeah!" I have a smelly washer! I love my front loading washing machine but I have had so much trouble with a stinky mildewy smell that is hard to get rid of. This washer has a button for silver care for odors but it doesn't seem to help. I had tried many different options before trying Smelly Washer like wiping inside the machine after finishing for the day and leaving the door open for it to finish drying out but the smell is still there.

I am going to tell you a little bit about Smelly Washer first then I will tell you how it worked for me.

My Review
My front loading washing machine is great except for the fact that it smells- I wash daily because I do not like to have a massive mountain of clothes to do in one day. I noticed that the washer starting smelling like mildew and mold. I put bleach in my load of towels to see if that would help it really didnt help much. I have 2 guys that sweat alot being outside- my hubby and my 16 year old son who plays sports and has an afterschool and summertime job at the golf course so he is outside alot. My husband complains that when he starts sweating his shirts smell sour.
They also tend to leave towels and washclothes laying after use instead of hanging up to dry or throwing them in the laundry. I kept thinking this was my problem but after washing each load of clothes the smell never got better. I am guilty of occasionally forgetting about clothes in the washer if I get busy ( my ADD helps with that)
So Smelly washer cleaner now comes into play. I followed the instructions on the bottle:
add 1 level cap of Smelly washer in the dispenser and agitate in its hottest setting for 2 minutes. check
stop the washer and allow to soak overnight. check
In the morning complete the cycle. More extreme cases may need several cleanings. check
Just a teaspoon run through a "soak" cycle monthly will keep your washer fresh. ok will do

Ok so I did all the above and I hurried down to the washer (its in our basement) to see if the smell was gone. I stuck my head in the washer to smell- oh it wasn't gone- I must be one of the EXTREME cases- so I did it again that day and let it soak all day and run it in the evening and hurried again to see if the smell was gone- Ah it smelled fresh- it was gone! It did require 2 "soaks" and I did put it in the detergent section, bleach and fabric softener section also. I am so happy that I do not have to smell that stinky mildewy stench again, I now have a solution that I can count on.

Great fabric store with awesome customer service

If you are looking for a great fabric store with tons and tons of designer fabrics to choose from then go to fabricworm.com. Not only do they have lots of fabrics and patterns but they have great customer service. Today I received my fabric order, I had a 1/2 yard of fabric that I didn't order and then I realized that I also had one missing. I emailed Cynthia and let her know that I received one and was missing a fabric. She emailed me back within 5 minutes and not only apologized but said to keep the other fabric and the one missing would be in the mail. That folks is awesome customer service, I just had to get on here and let my readers know what a great store they are running. In this day and time, customer service goes a long way with me, there are too many rude and uncaring people out there that don't care. I would much rather support a small business with great people like Cynthia at fabricworm!

Snow, snow go away- so ready for spring

March is definitely coming in like a lion roaring its head- it started snowing at about 7 am and hasn't stopped- we have about 6 inches so far with forecast of snow continuing during the night.
I am sooo tired of snow- we have had more snow in the last 2 months than we have had in probably 15 years. I am so glad that we are out of the dreary months- January & February with spring just around the corner.

I received this in an email and just wanted to share because it is true

be more important as you get older. No matter how

much you love your husband, no matter how much you

love the children you may have, you are still going

to need sisters. Remember to go places with them now

and then; do things with them.'

'Remember that 'sisters' means ALL the

women...

your girlfriends, your daughters, and all your other

women relatives too. 'You'll need other women.

What a funny piece of advice!' the young woman

thought. Haven't I just gotten married?

Haven't I just joined the couple-world? I'm now a

married woman, for goodness sake! A grownup! Surely

my husband and the family we may start will be all I

need to make my life worthwhile!'

But she listened to her mother. She kept contact

with her sisters and made more women friends each

year. As the years tumbled by, one after another,

knew what she was talking about. As time and nature

between you. A girl friend is never farther away

When you have to walk that lonesome valley and you

have to walk it by yourself, the women in your life

will be on the valley's rim, cheering you on,

praying for you, pulling for you, intervening on

your behalf, and waiting with open arms at the

valley's end.

Sometimes, they will even break the rules and walk

beside you...Or come in and

carry you out.

Girlfriends, daughters, granddaughters,

daughters-in-law, sisters, sisters-in-law, Mothers,

Grandmothers, aunties, nieces, cousins, and extended

family: all bless our life!

The world wouldn't be the same without women, and

neither would I. When we began this adventure called

womanhood, we had no idea of the incredible joys or

sorrows that lay ahead. Nor did we know how much we

would need each other..

My Review: I have read alot of Wanda Brunstetter's novel and enjoyed all of them, Kelly's Chance is no exception, it is excellent. Set in the 1890's in Pennysylvania, this book is so well written, you feel like you are part of the story.
The book's main character-Kelly McGregor has big dreams of being an artist but is not looking forward to marriage or a husband. Someone else in the story has his eye on her and feels like she was sent by God to be his wife. The courtship is so wonderful to read about. Excellent book with a wonderful ending.

Don't drink and drive- Buzzed driving campaign

It's holiday party season - time to celebrate all of the exciting
winter holidays with our friends and loved ones. Our mailboxes are
flooded with invitations to parties and dinners and other holiday
get-togethers. With these parties come food, fellowship, gifts, and
in many cases, festive alcoholic drinks.

In 2008, nearly 12,000 people in the U.S. were killed in
alcohol-impaired driving crashes - and during the periods around
Christmas and New Year's, this number was particularly high, with 316
people killed in alchol-impaired driving crashes. In 2007, 162,493
women were arrested for a DUI, an increase of almost 29% since 1998.
You can't help but wonder if lives could have been saved if people
thought twice before getting behind the wheel. With the holidays
approaching, it's important that drivers be reminded about the dangers
of buzzed driving. Who knows...it could save a life.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) and the Ad
Council are asking everyone to drive smart this holiday season and to
pledge not to drive buzzed. Help spread this message during the
holiday season by posting about the dangers of buzzed driving, sharing
a story or experience you might have had with buzzed driving and
encouraging readers to follow Buzzed Driving on Twitter
(@buzzeddriving) and Facebook
(http://www.facebook.com/buzzeddrivingisdrunkdriving) to get the
latest updates and news. You can also visit the Buzzed Driving

First snow before Christmas

On Friday, we had our first snow this holiday season. It was beautiful watching the huge snowflakes falling, reminiscing about days when we were kids, playing and sledding in the snow. The snow was very wet and heavy piling up quickly on trees and roads. We did not have as much as some areas close by, we ended up with about 5 inches. The power went off at 9 pm Friday and did not come back on until 2 pm Sunday afternoon. It was not fun anymore by Saturday evening. The roads still have alot of snow piled up from the road scrapers and now when it melts causes the roads at night and early morning to be slick. I like the snow but not when it causes dangerous conditions.
This year has passed by so fast , I hope that everyone has a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Phew- finally after almost 48 hours- we have power again. We had a huge snowstorm in western NC and power went off at 9 pm Friday night and just came back on. I realize now how much I take for granted. I like my power!

I took a vocational course in horseshoeing after earning a bachelor's degree in history. I don't shoe horses anymore, but the experience has come in handy in writing my books.

Another longtime hobby of mine is genealogy, which has led me down many fascinating paths. I'm proud to be a DAR member! Some of Jim's and my quirkier ancestors have inspired fictional characters

For many years I worked for the Central Maine Morning Sentinel as a freelancer, covering local government, school board meetings, business news, fires, auto accidents, and other local events, including a murder trial. I've also written many profiles and features for the newspaper and its special sections. This experience was a great help in developing fictional characters and writing realistic scenes. I also published nonfiction articles in several magazines and had several short stories appear in Woman's World, Grit, and Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine.

My husband, Jim, and I moved to his birth state, Oregon, for a while after we were married, but decided to move back to Maine and be near my family. We're so glad we did. It allowed our six children to grow up feeling close to their cousins and grandparents, and some of Jim's family have even moved to Maine!

MY REVIEW: Gert Dooley- I thought the name was very unusual but then again it is the late 1800s- anyway she goes to Idaho because she needs to help her brother. When she arrives she finds her brother grieving over the deaths of her sister-in-law and new baby. She stays to help him and ends up becoming very good at handling a gun. Her brother repairs them and she tests them. The sheriff is murdered and a new sheriff takes his place. Together they end up protecting the town.
This book has alot of mystery and adventure, not alot of romance. Very interesting read, I enjoyed it and can't wait for sequel.

Update about my wrist

I posted on my book review: raising rain that I had not done much lately and that included reading the book- raising rain because I had an accident. I fell going down icy steps to warm up my car at 7 in the morning over a week ago. I went to the ER that day - 12/2 and had xrays done. The radiologist read my xray and reported no break- well I went to my ortho doctor today for checkup on my shoulder surgery and I told him about my fall. My wrist is still swollen on the outside and tender to touch so he ordered new xrays and guess what- It is broken at my styloid process on the outside. Luckily I don't have to wear a cast but I do have to wear a brace for 4-6 weeks. Great, just in time for Christmas, well it could be worse and been a bad break that required surgery.

MY REVIEW: I recently received a 4 oz bottle of Skin MD Natural Shielding lotion and I have to admit I thought it wouldn't last more than 3-4 uses. I usually use huge bottles of lotion, piling it on thick. Boy was I wrong, I have used the skin MD lotion several times a day for over 2 weeks now and the bottle is still over half full, a little does go a long way.
When I received this lotion my hands were beginning to show the signs of cold weather dryness that I always get during the fall and winter seasons. My hands get dry, flaky and sometimes even crack making them look so much older and ugly. I started using the lotion paying particular attention to an area on my index finger that I had noticed the skin cracking open under the first knuckle. **I have not reviewed this book yet due to... well my accident- I slipped on icy steps going out to start my car. I fell very hard on my bottom and of course my reflexes work well and I threw both of my hands out to catch me. I just had rotator cuff surgery on the right shoulder in Oct. I hurt my right wrist ending up in the er because my husband and I thought I might have broken it. After xrays and wearing a splint for some time, it is not broken just a bad sprain. It hurts and I just haven't felt like doing much. I do plan on reading this book very soon, love the cover.

My Review: I enjoyed this book, it reminds of old westerns- it is about a couple going on the trail to teach about Christ to Indians but Janie's husband is killed by the first Indians they see- she continues on with faith encountering a lot of different people along the way. She discovers love again. This book definitely talks about Jesus Christ and his amazing grace and mercy and I appreciate it.

The sound of little girls’ voices and the sight of the sun streaming through the tall, second-story window of the Open Door Home for Destitute Girls, a privately owned orphanage on upper Manhattan, told nineteen-year-old Julia Cavanaugh that the day had started without her. Above the house, she’d stitched the words Home Sweet Home in fancy script. Gazing around the broad room lined with small metal cots and bustling with little-girl chatter, Julia noted the embroidered pillowslips, carefully pressed—albeit dingy—curtains, and dandelions smiling from scavenged jam-jar vases. She’d done her best to make the room pleasant for the girls—and herself. She glanced at their faces and smiled, gladly embracing her role as caretaker.

A less-than-subtle “ahem” from Shelby reminded Julia she’d been asked a question. She glanced at her young charge, still perched on the end of her bed. “What did you ask?”

“Finally.” Shelby eyed her with mock frustration. “I said, do you think they will get married—Mrs. Hamlin and Mr. Gaffin? Haven’t you noticed the way they look at each other?” Shelby’s cheeks hinted of red. Her golden hair was already fixed in a proper bun, her hands and face washed, and her simple dress clean and pressed despite its patches and stray threads.

“Shelby Bruce.” Julia shook her head, as Shelby’s two-year-old sister Beatrice wiggled onto Julia’s lap with a squeal. Julia planted a firm kiss on the top of Bea’s head.

“Married? I don’t think so,” Julia continued. “Mrs. Hamlin would’ve told us—told me—if she was being courted. Mr. Gaffin’s just an old family friend.” Julia wondered where on earth the girl got the notion that their headmistress wished to marry.

Although they have been spending a lot of time together. Julia pushed the thought out of her mind as little Bea shuffled to a stand, planting her pint-sized feet on Julia’s thighs. “Fammy fend!” She pointed a chubby finger at her older sister, Shelby.

“All right, Bea.” Julia plopped the toddler on the floor and swiveled her toward the small bed she shared with Shelby. “Time to straighten your bed.” Then Julia eyed the twins. “Charity, Grace, would you two virtuous girls fetch fresh water for the basin?”

Shelby pushed away from the bed, wrinkled her brow, and thrust her hand behind her as if to support her back—a perfect imitation of their middle-aged headmistress. “Now where did I put my spectacles?” Shelby clucked her tongue as she waddled forward.

Laughter spilled from the lips of the girls around the room. Encouraged, Shelby scratched her head. She plopped down on her bed then hopped up again as if surprised, pulling imaginary spectacles from under her rump. “Oh!” she squealed. “There they are.”

The laughter grew louder, and Julia pursed her lips together to smother the impulse to laugh along with them. She planted her fists on her hips. “That’s enough. All of you know what must be done before breakfast.” The girls’ laughter quieted to soft giggles hidden behind cupped palms as they scattered to do their chores.

Shelby lingered behind, her form now straight and her eyes pensive. “Maybe she forgot to tell you, Miss Cavanaugh.” The young girl gazed up at her. “The way they look at each other—it’s like my ma and pa used to, that’s all.”

Julia folded a stray sandy blond curl behind the girl’s ear. “Don’t worry, my sweet. If Mrs. Hamlin was getting married, we’d be the first to know.”

Julia hoped her own gaze didn’t reflect the sinking disquiet that draped her. Mr. Gaffin was a rich world traveler. If there was any truth to Shelby’s suspicion, Julia couldn’t imagine he’d let Mrs. Hamlin continue to work with orphans. Perhaps they’d get a new headmistress.

Or maybe the girls would be separated, moved to new homes…

If Mrs. Hamlin got married, all their lives would be radically changed. And if Julia had to leave the orphanage, she had no idea what she would do. Julia swept that painful thought away and steadied her gaze at Shelby. She couldn’t hide her true feelings from this girl. Julia took Shelby’s hand and answered as honestly as she could.

“I don’t think she’ll get married, but if she does, God will take care of us, like He always has.” Julia lifted her chin in a smile. “And really, Mrs. Hamlin may be forgetful, but no one could forget that. I sure wouldn’t.”

Ardy, a shy Swedish girl, removed her dirty sheets from a small bed and then approached, taking Julia’s hand. “Don’t ya think you’ll ever be gettin’ married?”

“Actually, there is something I’ve been wanting to tell you all….” Julia leaned forward, resting her hands on her knees.

The two girls eyed each other in surprise, and Shelby’s brow furrowed.

“Come closer.” Julia curled a finger, bidding them.

“What is it?” Shelby asked, her eyes glued to Julia.

The girls leaned in. “I’d like to tell you…that there’s a wonderful man who’s asked me to marry him!”

The squeals of two girls erupted, followed by the cheers of nearly three dozen others who’d been quietly listening from the stairwell.

“There is?” Shelby reached forward and squeezed Julia’s hand.

Julia let out a hefty sigh and giggled. “No, you sillies. Well, at least not yet. Someday. Maybe.”

Shelby pouted “But you said… ”

“I said I’d like to tell you I had a man. I’d sure like to, but of course since I don’t, I’m happy to stay here with all of you.”

The girls moaned.

The squeak of the front door down on the first floor of the Revolutionary War–era home-turned-orphanage drew their attention. They waited as Mrs. Hamlin’s familiar chortle filled the air, along with a bash and clang of items—hopefully food and supplies that she’d picked up.

“Julia!” Mrs. Hamlin yelped. “Julia, dear, where are you?”

“Coming.” Julia hurried down the stairs to help the older woman.

Julia neared the bottom of the steps and paused, trying to stifle a laugh at the sight of the twinkly-eyed woman sprawled flat on her back. Scattered boxes and bags covered the donated rug.

“Mrs. Hamlin! What on earth? Why didn’t you get a steward to help you?”

“Oh, I didn’t want to be a bother.” She cheerfully picked herself up. “I was in such a hurry to show you all what I’d bought. And to tell you my surprise. Such a wonderful surprise.” Julia eyed the boxes and noted they were from R.H. Macy & Co. More than a dozen boxes waited to be opened, and she couldn’t imagine the cost.

“I found just what the girls need, and on sale!” the headmistress exclaimed.

What they need is more food—vitamin drops, too—and maybe a few new schoolbooks. But Julia didn’t dare say it. And somehow God’s hand of providence always provided.

“New clothes, I gather. That is a surprise.”

“But only half of it, dear.” Mrs. Hamlin rubbed her palms expectantly. “I also must tell you my news. The best news an old widow could hope for.”

Julia followed Mrs. Hamlin’s gaze toward the idle youngsters who’d gathered on the staircase to watch. Her eyes locked with Shelby’s, then she quickly looked away. “News?” The muscles in Julia’s stomach tightened.

“Girls,” Julia shooed them away with a wave of her hand, “you know better than to eavesdrop. Off to chores with you. We’ll have breakfast soon.”

The girls started to scurry off, but Mrs. Hamlin halted them with her words.

“No, no,” her high-pitched voice hailed. “Come back. This news is for all of you.” They circled around her, and she tenderly patted their bobbing heads.

“What is it?” Julia wasn’t sure she’d ever seen Mrs. Hamlin’s cheeks so rosy or her eyes so bright.

“I’m getting married!”

My review: A wonderful simple love story with true romance. Old west scenery and life made very real, it made you feel like you were there. I enjoyed this book and recommend reading to all. Great story line with a wonderful message about God and how we should trust him.

I love handmade things- I dabble in various craft projects but my mind spins so fast (I think I have ADHD) that I want to make everything that I see or like.
